KenGen wants to advance in the Olkaria I and V projects in Kenya and has released Expressions of Interest to develop 210 MW at the site.

Bloomberg has announced that the Kenya Electricity Generating Co (KenGen) is looking for bids two geothermal power plants that would add a total of 210 MW to the Grid.

These two plants are aimed at developing the Olkaria I and V field in Kenya. The former would imply a 140 MW project and the latter, 70 MW as said by KenGen.

According to Bloomberg, the Rift Valley area is extremely rich in geothermal potential and the country needs to develop said potential fast in order to cope with the increase in demand for electricity. The news source states that “By 2030, Kenya estimates it will need some 15,000 MW of extra capacity, with much coming from geothermal and other renewables which will be both cheaper than widely-used diesel generators and more reliable than its hydropower dams.”
