KenGen set to start construction of 140 MW Olkaria V plant this year

KenGen is expecting to start construction activities for the 140 MW Olkaria V geothermal power project near Naivasha, Kenya before the end of the year.
Reported from Kenya, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is ready to start construction of the 140 MW Olkaria V geothermal project before the end of this year.
In an interview with Chinese news agency Xinhua, KenGen’s Geothermal Development Director Abel Rotich said that the company has already secureding funding of $300 million for the project.
“The process to identify the contractor will begin in October and so we hope to finalize the tendering process to select the contractor soon so that the ground breaking ceremony for the 140 MW geothermal plant to begin before the end of the year.” Rotich said.
The construction of the plant is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
Rotich said that geothermal steam exploration is carried out by the government and then the steam is sold to power firms to convert it into electricity.
