Kenya's Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has signed a contract for directional drilling services to be acquired from Chinese firm Great Wall Drilling.

The Kenyan Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has announced having signed a contract with Chinese Great Wall Drilling Company ltd. to drill directional geothermal wells at project sites in Menengai, Kenya.

At a meeting in Kenya, GDC MD & CEO, Eng. Johnson P. Ole Nchoe and Great Wall Drilling Company Director Mr. Wei Yong Chen, signed the contract.

“GDC is pleased to once again partner with Great Wall; under this contract Great wall will drill 16 directional wells in Menengai,” noted the MD.

GDC has partnered with Great Wall Drilling before on the drilling of several wells in Olkaria under a contract in 2009/ 2010.

“We need to fast track this assignment and I am confident that you will execute it fast,’ added Eng. Ole Nchoe. The Great Wall’s director, Mr. Wei Yong Chen assured GDC that with their many years of experience in the geothermal industry, they will meet the set targets.

So far wells have been drilled vertically and directional drilling will supplement wells to be drilled in the Menengai geothermal field.

Through directional drilling, it will be possible to drill several wells on one well pad, thus saving money that would have gone into preparing additional well pads as well as saving time associated with rig move.
