Iceland to host World Geothermal Congress 2020

Iceland wins its bid for hosting the World Geothermal Congress 2020. This event takes place every 5 years and is the largest gathering of the global geothermal energy sector.
The global geothermal sector meets every 5 years at its largest gathering, the World Geothermal Congress, often described as the “Olympics” for the sector. Held in Istanbul/ Turkey in 2005, in Bali/ Indonesia in 2010, the event will next be held in Melbourne/ Australia in April 2015.

Now, the the International Geothermal Association (IGA) announced in its 97th newsletter (October to December 2014) that the World Geothermal Congress in 2020 (WGC 2020) has been awarded to Iceland, IGA stated:
“Following an extensive evaluation, some additional correspondence with bidders, and three rounds of voting, the proposal submitted by Iceland was accepted by the Board as the winner. The board will now enter into negotiations to conclude an agreement to host WGC 2020 in Iceland.”
The Icelandic Geothermal Sector, the Iceland Geothermal Cluster and Iceland are extremely proud to receive the nomination from IGA to host WGC 2020. It is an honor to be selected to host WGC 2020 and it is a conformation of the uniqueness of Iceland as a geothermal nation, both in terms of its resources as well as the knowledge generation that has been created within the Icelandic geothermal sector.
