Iceland's Landsvirkjun signs new PPA with silicon metal factory for up to 58 MW of power generation capacity from 2017. The power is partly to come from the planned Theistareykir geothermal power plant in the North of Iceland.

Icelandic National Power Company (Landsvirkjun) has signed a new power purchase agreement with PCC Tray Silicon for a silicano metal plant to be built at Bakki in the North of Iceland.

The factory is expected to start operation in 2017 and produce up to 36 thousand tons of silicon metal and require up to 58 MW of power generation capacity.

The new PPA is similar to a previously signed contract, which was reviewed by the EFTA Surveillance Authority in December last year.

Part of the power for this PPA will come from the company’s Theistareykir geothermal power project, which recently signed a contract with Fuji Electric and Balcke-Duerr on the provision of turbines and cooling towers.
