Ongoing debate on development in national parks in Costa Rica
An ongoing debate is happening in Costa Rica regarding if it should be allowed to develop geothermal on protected areas and how (via public/private partnerships or both)
Following a similar issue to what happened in Indonesia (See News Link), when the government decided to allow geothermal exploration and exploitation in forests and protected areas; environmentalists are also pushing the debate for the same issue in Costa Rica.
According to local news, there are several initiatives in the Government to be pursued, yet the question lies on how to move forward; since environmentalists say that there is no need to expand power generation and are extremely concerned to the impact that it might have to the fauna and flora, other politicians want to open up the market and allow private and public partnerships on protected areas and other mention that there is plenty of potential to be exploited but due to the aforementioned complaints, the advantages remain untapped.
This is surely a complicated issue and we will be covering it as it develops.
