A local article from Hawaii looks into the history of geothermal energy in Hawaii and the possible second chance for development on the island state.
A recent article in a paper from Hawaii provided an interesting description of the history of geothermal energy development in the U.S. state of Hawaii.
The article describes that the “first geothermal well was drilled by the state in 1976 and began producing electricity in 1982. … and operated for seven years.” Today geothermal energy provides about 20% of the big island.
People were initially very opposed to utilizing geothermal energy as it was considered to hurt a nearby wet forest and a sacred place for Native Hawaiians.
