Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is shutting down Unit 1 of the Bacman geothermal plant for 45 days for rehabilitation, installing a new Toshiba steam turbine rotor unit and diaphragms.

On December 29, 2014, Energy Development Corp. reported that it will “shut down a 55-megawatt unit of the Bacman geothermal power plants in Bicol region for a 45-day rehabilitation.

EDC said unit 1 of the Bacman geothermal power plants located in Bacon, Sorsogon province and Manito, Albay province would be offline for 45 days to give way to the installation of a new steam turbine rotor.

“We advise the exchange that Bac-Man Geothermal Inc., the wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy Development Corp. that owns and operates the Bacman power plants, has placed unit 1 on planned outage, starting Dec. 28, 2014, for an estimated duration of 45 days,” EDC said in a disclosure to the stock exchange.

EDC said the shutdown of the unit would give way for the installation of the brand new Toshiba steam turbine rotor unit and diaphragms.

The Bacman geothermal plants now have total capacity of 135 MW, including unit I (55 MW), unit II (60 MW) and unit III (20 MW).

The plants all use geothermal steam supplied by EDC, the country’s biggest geothermal power producer.

Bacman unit II, which was previously running at only 55 MW, was upgraded to a 60-MW plant following the installation of Toshiba turbine.

The installation of the brand new Toshiba steam turbine rotor unit and diaphragms for unit 2 referred to as permanent fix was completed in September 2014.

EDC recently settled its arbitration claims with contractor Siemens Inc. of Germany for the Bacon-Manito geothermal power plants.”
