Italian Enel and Japanese Marubeni are partnering on joint energy development in Indonesia, which will also include geothermal projects in the country but also Myanmar and Vietnam at a later stage.

Reported today from Japan, Italian Enel Group and Japanese trading house Marubeni have entered a partnership agreement and plan to join forces in developing power plants.

The MoU signed aims to win at least two projects by 2018, both for fossil fuel based power plants, but also geothermal power plant.

While the agreement is currently focused on Indonesia, the companies could also partner on development in Myanmar (Burma) and Vietnam.

Enel will bring its subsurface exploration know-how for geothermal development, as the company operates a wide array of fossil fuel, geothermal and solar power plants in Europe, South America and Africa. The agreement will help Enel to get a strong foothold in Asia, which has been somewhat challenging for the company so far. Marubeni will be able to increase its business activities in South America and Africa, where it doesn’t have  a particularly strong position.
