With a record attendance of probably around 2,500 participants, this year‘s World Geothermal Congress was opened today in Bali, Indonesia.

Held every 5 years, the event sees participants from around the world, sharing their experiences of geothermal development, research and more.

In their opening speeches, Indonesia‘s president and the country‘s Minister for Energy highlighted the importance and potential of geothermal energy in Indonesia. Following the keynote of Iceland‘s President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Indonesia‘s president highlighted the Icelandic experience and the potential for cooperation between both countries.

The conference was kicked off with a great welcoming party the night before with traditional performance of Bali artists and live music around the pool of the Westin Hotel right at the beach in Nusa Dua, Bali.

The trade show element of the event is actually rather crammed and small, but sees a large number of international companies showcasing their work and service offerings. There are about 4 country booths, by Australia, Holland, Germany (represented through a Bavarian booth and one of GFZ in Potsdam), as well as a booth representing seven Icelandic companies.

The congress‘ conference element is rather extensive with presentations en masse. Hard to choose any of the presentations to attend. But there is a whole week at this biggest ever geothermal energy event, so there should be enough time for people to meet and exchange their ideas.

I hope to keep people posted with news from the event.

Pictures of the event can be found on Flickr. I also posted a video of a little video played at the opening ceremony (via YouTube).
